Raven Saunders’ gesture on Olympic podium authorized, U.S. committee says
Tokyo — The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee says shot putter Raven Saunders’ gesture throughout her medals ceremony “was respectful of her rivals and didn’t violate our guidelines associated to demonstration.”
After receiving her silver medal on the Olympics on Sunday, and after the Chinese language nationwide anthem performed for winner Gong Lijiao, Saunders lifted her arms above her head and fashioned an “X” together with her wrists.
Requested by The Related Press what that meant, she defined: “It is the intersection of the place all people who find themselves oppressed meet.”
In the course of the Worldwide Olympic Committee’s press briefing Monday morning, spokesman Mark Adams mentioned the IOC was in touch with the USOPC concerning the episode.
